Two Reasons Why Homeowners Whose Belongings Aren’t Valuable Should Have Security Systems

Dawn Garza

Homeowners who have little to no valuable belongings in their homes often assume that they don't need security systems, as there isn't much in their homes for burglars to steal. Here are two reasons why homeowners of this kind should still have security systems.

A security system that prevents a break-in could spare the homeowner a traumatic experience

One reason why homeowners who don't have many valuables should still have a system like this is that it could spare them a lot of trauma. Some homeowners in this situation feel that because they have no valuables and would not, therefore, lose too many items if their home was broken into, they would not be affected by their home being burglarised. However, when a person's home is broken into, it can be a very traumatic experience for them, regardless of whether they were in their home when the break-in happened or were elsewhere. This is partly due to the distress of having their private property invaded by an intruder and partly because burglars can, in some instances, become violent when they encounter a property owner during a break-in.

It can take months or, in some cases, years for a homeowner to get over this experience, and it can lead to long-term feelings of being unsafe in their home. Fortunately, if a homeowner puts a security system in their home that features security cameras, an alarm and a panic button, they might be able to avoid this trauma. This is because burglars will typically avoid properties that have outdoor security cameras or other signs of a security system and because burglars who make attempts to get into homes that have security systems will rarely, if ever, be successful in their efforts to do this.

Security systems don't just protect a home from burglaries

Another reason why homeowners who don't own any valuable items should still have security systems is that these systems don't just help to ward off burglars, but also other individuals who might have different motives (such as a desire to vandalise a home). Vandals who, for example, may be planning to spray paint a house or ransack its interior, need time to do these things and so will not be able to achieve their aim if the property they've selected has an alarm that sets itself off automatically.

This is worth noting, as even a homeowner who doesn't have valuable possessions to worry about would still find it expensive and difficult to repair their home after some vandals damaged it. They might, for example, have to replace their graffitied wallpaper and carpets and have a lot of their damaged furniture replaced.
